Effective January 1, 2024, the California minimum wage (applies to all employers regardless of size) is $16/hour. This will also be the rate when computing overtime (1 ½ times).
Remember that some cities and counties have their own minimum wage rate, which is higher. To find out the rate in your city, do an Internet search such as:
“City of _________________ (Name) minimum-wage 2024.”
There will also be an increase in the minimum salary for exempt employees. In 2024 it must be at least $66,560/year or $5,546.67 per month.
As before, outside salespersons are exempt from minimum wage and overtime, including rest periods. This is regardless of the compensation they earn. This applies to persons who regularly spend more than one-half of their working hours away from the company’s place of business and obtain orders for products or services, as well as selling items.
Make sure you post the new California minimum wage order in your lunchrooms or other accessible areas. For the sign, go to: https://www.dir.ca.gov/wpnodb.html.
